What to do in Salzburg as a Tourist
Salzburg (Austria) is one of those cities that feels like a movie set — baroque buildings, mountains right behind the rooftops, Mozart everywhere, and a very walkable old town. You can realistically see the highlights in 2–3 days, but there’s a lot packed into a small area.
Here’s a clear tourist game-plan 👇
🏰 1) Explore the Old Town (Altstadt) — UNESCO World Heritage
This is the heart of Salzburg. You don’t need a strict plan — wandering is part of the experience.
What not to miss:
Getreidegasse – narrow medieval street with iron guild signs and Mozart’s birthplace
Mozart’s Birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus) – small but interesting museum
Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg) – massive interior and free entry to the main church area
Residenzplatz & Kapitelplatz – the big squares (you’ll see the golden sphere statue)
Tip: Go early morning (before 9:30) or after dinner — tour groups flood the area midday.
🏯 2) Hohensalzburg Fortress (the castle on the hill)
You literally cannot miss it — it towers above the city.
Why go
Best view of Salzburg + Alps
Medieval rooms, weapons, and history
Evening concerts sometimes held inside
You can:
hike up (20–30 min, steep but scenic)
or take the funicular (most people do this)
Go near sunset → you’ll understand why this city is famous.
🎵 3) Mozart & Music Culture
Salzburg is Mozart’s hometown and takes that very seriously.
Options:
Mozart Residence (more personal history than the birthplace)
Classical concert in a palace or fortress (highly recommended — even non-classical fans enjoy it)
Marionette Theater (very unique Salzburg thing)
🎬 4) The Sound of Music Locations
Even Austrians laugh about how obsessed tourists are with this — but it’s actually fun.
You can visit:
Mirabell Gardens (Do-Re-Mi song filmed here)
Pegasus Fountain
Nonnberg Abbey
Leopoldskron Palace (the lake house)
There are half-day bus tours, but honestly you can self-tour most sites.
🌄 5) Mirabell Palace & Gardens
Free entry and one of the prettiest parts of the city.
Perfect photos
Mountain backdrop
Best in spring/summer, but even winter is nice
Also: cross the pedestrian bridge nearby — locals put love locks there.
🏔️ 6) Day Trips (VERY worth it)
Salzburg is small — the surrounding area is part of the experience.
Top choices:
Hallstatt (1.5–2h) → the famous lake village you’ve probably seen on Instagram
Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) → historical mountain site near Berchtesgaden
Salzkammergut lakes region → stunning alpine lakes
Untersberg mountain cable car → closest big mountain view
If you only choose one: do Hallstatt OR Untersberg.
🍽️ Food You Should Try
Austrian food is hearty and excellent.
Must-eat:
Wiener Schnitzel
Apple strudel (Apfelstrudel)
Salzburger Nockerl (local fluffy dessert — huge portion)
Pretzels from street bakeries
Austrian coffee houses (they are part of the culture)
Avoid restaurants right next to the cathedral — tourist prices. Walk 5–10 minutes away.
💡 Practical Tips
You don’t need a car — the city center is walkable
Public buses work well for outer areas
Salzburg is expensive (especially hotels)
Shops close early (often 6pm) and most close Sundays
Best months: May–June or September (July/August crowded)
